Technical SEO Basics: What Business Owners Need to Know
Practical guidance for better search and website decisions.
← All insightsTechnical SEO is the part of website maintenance that helps search engines access, interpret and index pages. For a business owner, the first goal is to make sure valuable service pages work reliably for visitors and can be found in search.
Check access and indexing
A page can be published yet excluded by noindex, a canonical pointing elsewhere, a redirect or a server error. Inspect a priority URL in Search Console, confirm it loads successfully and compare its canonical with the intended page. Cart, checkout and private workflow pages can reasonably stay out of search; service pages usually should not be excluded accidentally.
Use a clear site structure
Important services should be reachable through navigation or useful internal links, not only through an XML sitemap. Descriptive anchor text tells visitors what they will find next. Remove broken links and unnecessary redirect chains. A clean hierarchy also makes it easier to see when two pages cover the same subject.
Review mobile loading
Test a real service page on a phone. Look for slow main content, layout shifts, obstructive overlays and buttons that cannot be tapped. PageSpeed lab scores vary, so inspect the reported issues and available field data before changing cache or script settings. Test forms and menus after any performance change.
Keep URLs and migrations controlled
If a page moves, redirect the old URL to the most relevant replacement and update internal links. Check the new URL’s indexability and canonical. Do not redirect every retired article to the homepage; irrelevant redirects confuse visitors. Keep a list of changed URLs and verify a sample after deployment.
Use structured data only when it matches content
Schema can describe an organisation, a page or an article, but it does not replace visible information. Avoid marking up reviews, FAQs or services that the page does not actually provide. Validate major templates and watch for duplicate output when themes and SEO plugins both generate schema.
