On-Page SEO Checklist for Service Business Websites
Practical guidance for better search and website decisions.
← All insightsOn-page SEO helps a service business explain its offer to search engines and customers. This checklist focuses on pages that can generate enquiries: the homepage, core service pages and useful supporting articles.
Choose one search purpose per page
Define the service and customer question each page should answer. A core service page should cover the offer, scope, service area, proof and next step. An article can answer a narrower question and link to the relevant service. Check whether another page already covers the same intent before creating a near-duplicate.
Write a specific title and description
The search title should name the service and location where relevant, while still reading naturally. The meta description should accurately preview the page and give a reason to click. Search engines may rewrite snippets, so these fields are useful signals rather than guaranteed display text. Avoid reusing the same title across several pages.
Make the visible page easy to scan
Use a clear H1 that matches the page’s main subject and H2 sections for the questions customers ask. Put the most important answer near the top. Explain what the business actually does instead of repeating the target phrase. Add prices, process details or examples only when accurate and useful.
Link to the next useful page
Use descriptive links from related articles to the matching service page, and from the service page to relevant supporting information. A link such as “Brisbane SEO services” gives more context than “click here.” Check that the destination works and serves the reader’s next question.
Check images and accessibility
Give informative images concise alternative text describing their content or purpose. Decorative graphics should usually have empty alt text. Ensure text has adequate contrast, headings follow a sensible order and buttons have understandable names. The page should remain usable by keyboard and on a phone.
Confirm technical signals
Check the page returns successfully, is indexable when intended, uses a sensible canonical, loads over HTTPS and is included in the appropriate sitemap. Review mobile loading and layout. For decisions about site structure and mobile experience, read our SEO-friendly website design guide. Do not treat a plugin score as proof that the page answers customer needs or converts visitors.
Measure the result
Record the edit date, relevant Search Console queries and the page’s enquiries before changing it. Review trends over a suitable period, allowing for search demand and seasonality. If impressions grow but leads do not, inspect the offer and contact route as well as the SEO copy.
