Internal Linking for SEO: A Practical Website Structure Guide

Practical guidance for better search and website decisions.

← All insights

Internal links help people move from a question to the service or next explanation they need. They also help search engines discover pages and understand their relationship. The goal is a useful structure, not a fixed number of links per article.

Identify important destinations

List the homepage, core service pages and a small number of substantial guides. A service page should be reachable through navigation and relevant contextual links. If an important page only appears in the sitemap, a visitor may never find it from the rest of the site. Begin with the pages that generate qualified enquiries and work out which supporting pages naturally refer to them.

Link from the right context

An article about a traffic drop can point to an SEO audit or technical SEO guide. A web design comparison can point to a website design service. Place the link where the reader naturally needs it rather than appending a list of unrelated services to every post. A sentence that explains why the destination helps is often more useful than a bare list of links.

Write useful anchor text

Describe the destination in a few natural words, such as ‘Brisbane SEO services’ or ‘technical SEO checklist’. Avoid repeated ‘click here’ links and avoid forcing an exact keyword into every anchor. Google advises descriptive link text because it helps both visitors and search engines understand the destination. Links also need to be visually distinguishable and usable with a keyboard.

Check for competing pages

If several posts cover the same search purpose, linking them together alone may not solve overlap. Decide which page should answer the main question and which articles address narrower aspects. Update older posts to point readers to the best destination. Consider merging only after comparing content, search performance and whether either page answers a distinct customer need.

Audit and maintain links

Review links after changing URLs or publishing new services. Fix broken links at the source, avoid unnecessary redirect chains, and check that links in menus and page builders point to live destinations. Measure whether readers reach and use the linked service page, not just whether a crawler counts the link. Revisit important pathways after any site redesign.
