Core Web Vitals and SEO: What Actually Matters to Customers

Practical guidance for better search and website decisions.

Core Web Vitals describe parts of the loading experience, but a good score is only useful if the page also works for customers. The three main measures concern when the largest content appears, how responsive the page feels and whether elements shift while loading.

Understand the three measures

Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, tracks when the main visible content loads. Interaction to Next Paint, or INP, concerns responsiveness to user actions. Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS, captures unexpected movement. Inspect the actual page and available real-user data before treating a single lab score as the whole story.

Look at the most important page first

A service page receiving relevant search traffic deserves attention before an unused template. Test on mobile and watch the header, main heading, image, call button and form. If an animation delays the main offer, decide whether its visual benefit justifies the wait. Protect the contact journey when changing assets or scripts.

Find a likely cause before changing settings

Large hero images, third-party scripts, unused theme files and late-loading fonts can affect loading or interaction. A page builder may load assets across many pages. Change one thing at a time, compare the same URL and device profile, and test menus, forms, tracking and any OTP flow after each performance change.

Use field and lab data carefully

Field data reflects real visits where enough data exists. Lab runs simulate a device and network and can vary between tests. Do not declare a five-point score change a success if the underlying load problem is unchanged. Record LCP, INP or its lab proxy, CLS and the page’s business outcome together.

Balance speed with usefulness

Removing an image or interactive feature solely to improve a score can make the service harder to understand. Compress suitable images, prioritise above-the-fold content and remove genuinely unused code where safe. A page that loads quickly but leaves visitors confused still needs content and conversion work.
