SEO Maintenance: What to Review Every Month
Practical guidance for better search and website decisions.
← All insightsSEO maintenance is a small recurring review of whether important pages still work, match the business and meet customer needs. It is more useful than publishing new posts by default every month. A short log of checks also helps identify when a later problem began.
Check the search trend
Review Search Console clicks, impressions and queries for priority pages. Compare similar time periods and note seasonal demand. Investigate a material decline by page and query rather than reacting to daily movement in one keyword. Record changes made since the last review. Distinguish a fall in search demand from a loss of position.
Test the customer journey
Open the main service pages and contact form on mobile. Check phone links, booking buttons, confirmations and lead delivery. If the site uses OTP or another verification step, test that path too. A broken enquiry flow can matter more than a modest change in average position. Make a test enquiry with a clear label so it can be identified and removed from reporting.
Review content accuracy
Update service coverage, hours, team details, pricing descriptions and examples when the business changes. Fix outdated claims and dead links. Check whether new articles duplicate existing ones or whether an older guide now has a better destination to link to. Keep useful historical content where it still answers a real question.
Inspect technical exceptions
Look for new indexing errors, important 404s, unexpected redirects, canonical changes and sitemap issues. Confirm that utility pages remain intentionally excluded while service pages remain indexable. Review performance issues on pages that generate demand before changing global cache or script settings. Recheck affected pages after a plugin or theme update.
Choose the next action
Prioritise work by customer impact and evidence. A service page with relevant impressions but weak clicks may need a clearer result snippet; clicks without qualified leads suggest content or conversion work. Keep a short log of actions and recheck their effect in the next monthly review. Avoid applying broad changes without a test and rollback path.
